Festive activities in and around Kensington

If you’re in London this Christmas, Kensington is well worth a visit. There’s lots going on throughout the festive season, from markets to museum exhibits – and when you need a bite to eat you can enjoy some good Indian food at Little India, one of South Kensington’s top eateries. So, without further ado, here are several fun activities to pop on your itinerary.

1. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland at London’s Hyde Park is just a stone’s throw from Kensington Gardens and is a must for families looking for some festive entertainment. Home to craft stalls, hot food sellers, an ice rink, an ice bar and a giant wheel to name just a few of the attractions, Winter Wonderland has something for everyone. Throw yourself into the action or simply wander round and soak up the festive atmosphere. Winter Wonderland runs from Friday 17 November until Monday 1 January 2024 and makes for a great day out for all ages.

2. Christmas at Portobello

Enjoy a festive Christmas market with a Portobello twist. On Sunday 3rd, 10th and 17th December 2023, this historic street will come to life with artisan stalls, vintage clothes sellers, street food and excited shoppers looking for unique festive gifts. Treat yourself to a cup of mulled wine, fill your tummy with traditional Christmas delights and find gifts you won’t see on the high street. If it’s a unique, authentic and charming activity you’re looking for, this one’s for you.

3. Christmas at the Natural History Museum

Kensington is the place to be for museum lovers, with Christmas at the Natural History Museum being a particular highlight. From seasonal science stations to wintery workshops, there’s a whole range of after-hours fun taking place with a festive twist, so don’t miss out. See some stunning snowy scenes at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition and take a last-minute tour of the ‘Titanosaur: Life as the Biggest Dinosaur’ exhibition before it closes in the new year.

4. Check Out the South Bank’s Winter Festival

Jump on the train at Gloucester Road station and be at the Embankment in just eleven minutes. From here you can enjoy South Bank’s Winter Festival which is home to an array of paid and free activities. See the Winter Light display of outdoor artwork, wander among the festive chalets at the Christmas market and experience a range of free dance workshops including afrobeat lessons. Amateur choirs will even be singing to get you in the festive mood, so it’s definitely worth the short trip from Kensington to South Bank this Christmas. The festival is running until 7 January 2024.
